Avery House, a halfway house for women and their children, provides a transitional program which fosters recovery through the love and care of a home community.

Services are provided through a contract between Montgomery County, Maryland and Chrysalis House, Inc. under a federal grant administered by the state of Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration. Additional sources of support include grants and foundations. At Avery House, the needs of recovering mothers and their children are met in a structured, supportive, and sober environment. The facility provides a variety of ethnic and cultural halfway house services up to nine months. √ Addresses the complexity of multiple roles of a person in recovery, mother, partner, and woman √ Emphasizes trust, integrity, self-discipline, and self-discovery √ Assists each woman to become personally and economically independent to care for her children safely √ Provides referrals to appropriate community resources for job training, housing, education, and mental health issues
All services are provided within the disease model of addiction.

Admission (Program Eligibility and Referral) Women who are pregnant or HIV positive are given priority admission to the Avery House. Other criteria include: ♦ 18 years or older ♦ Completion of a Montgomery County, Maryland approved intermediate care program (transfer directly to Avery House) ♦ Currently a Maryland resident ♦ Capable of self-care but not ready to return to the community or to live independently ♦ Willing to seek, obtain, and maintain employment ♦ Absence of any physical, emotional, or mental impairment that would prevent participation in the program
